Blanck Mass – No Lite (Genesis Breyer P-Orridge Dreamachine Remix)

One-sided 12in single, Sacred Bones Records

Available as a limited edition one-sided 12 inch remix single limited to 500 copies with a hand stamped label, this single sees the meeting of the critically applauded purveyor of new electronica, Blanck Mass, and avant-garde industrial music activist, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (known to some as GPO).

Blanck Mass is the solo electronic project of Benjamin John Power of the band Fuck Buttons. GPO, an original member of legendary industrial band Throbbing Gristle and later a founder member of Psychic TV, never shies away from the controversial, unorthodox or challenging.

If you are wondering what a ‘dreamachine’ is, it is a stroboscopic flicker device that produces visual stimuli. It is designed to induce a state of relaxation to the point of entering a hypnagogic state – a state of consciousness experienced during the onset of sleep.

Consisting solely of GPO’s six-minute ‘Dreamachine’ remix of Blanck Mass’ “No Lite” from the Dumb Flesh album, the emphasis is on the main section of the original track. The repetitive yet strangely hypnotic beat is brought to the forefront and given a tribal elasticity of its own. Enhanced by layers of exotic birdsong and expansive echoes with a voice – presumably GPO’s – momentarily echoing from way down in the mix.

As it builds to its finale, the beat becomes more insistent, joined by layers of whirring, cascading, distorted electronics that increase in intensity and urgency before quickly dissolving away at their euphoric height. Then, in the last few seconds as the track draws to a close, the beat dies away and we’re left with a drum, the solitary twang of a steel guitar and a sample of penny whistle being played. Those last few seconds carry militaristic overtones with a certain naïve charm.

It’s an unusual way to end a remix but it somehow fits, especially when you consider who is on remix duty. GPO doesn’t produce many remixes but this and her Nine Inch Nails remix a few years back are both strange and wonderful things. Would you expect anything else?
